Next Gen 2023

Have you been looking for a deeper, richer engagement with theatre that’s shaped with you, for you? Next Gen opens the door for people aged 18-29 to engage in the theatre industry with the support of Indian Ink Theatre Company. Youth selected for the 12 month initiative will have the opportunity to build community during social activities and develop professional skills in a chosen area (e.g. writing, acting, directing and producing). You’ll be involved in our creative processes (workshops, rehearsals, performances) and the business (production, research and marketing). You’ll also connect with other like-minded practitioners and work on your own projects with mentorship and advice.

Who is Indian Ink?

We’re the people who create the theatre magic that leaves an indelible imprint on your heart, hence the name! You might have heard of Krishnan’s DairyGuru of Chai or Mrs Krishnan’s Party. We’re also one of the few kiwi companies who tour work internationally as well as domestically. For over two decades Jacob Rajan and Justin Lewis have written plays that pursue the idea of the ‘Serious Laugh’- opening mouths with laughter in order to slip something serious in, along with a love of mask and story.

How is Next Gen different from other rangatahi programmes?

  • It’s flexible: We co-design it based on your interests - with you, by you, for you.
  • It focuses on professional development for all areas in the theatre industry, not just a single discipline. We also offer mentorship from our core creative team.
  • It’s fun!  Building relationships and community is really important to us.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Aged between 18-29
  • Live in Auckland
  • Passionate about theatre

Application Timeline:

  • Applications open Thursday 17th November
  • Applications close Friday 9th December at 5pm
  • Notification date: Monday 19th December
