Creative Youth Amaze

Mairangi Arts Centre opens Artrageous Secondary Schools’ art exhibition on 24 August, a display which shines the spotlight on the talent of North Shore secondary school students.

This vibrant, biennial exhibition of emerging talent never fails to impress and amaze gallery visitors. Budding young artists aged from 13-18 years old showcase artworks they have created in class under the tutelage of their art teachers. The display features an eclectic mix of works include drawings, paintings and three-dimensional creations constructed with a variety of materials. Subject matter is equally varied, often edgy, sometimes controversial but always captured from the unique perspective of youth.

“Artrageous provides students the opportunity to not only display their artistic skills but to truly express themselves on a public platform. I am looking forward to seeing the works of those that are passionate in developing their artistic practice,” says Clint Taniguchi, Mairangi Arts Centre’s General Manager.

Although the underlying principle of the exhibition is collaboration there is also an element of competition. Students vie for three Outstanding Student Awards of $50 product vouchers from both Gordon Harris Albany and Mairangi Arts Centre as well as the opportunity to exhibit with other Outstanding Student prize winners at Mairangi Arts Centre in 2020.

The judge for this year’s exhibition is Mikayla Journee. Mikayla is the current Public Programme Manager at NZ Maritime Museum and co-editor of Tauhere/ Connections- an Emerging Museum Professionals Journal. Mikayla is also a Lake House Arts Centre board member and a former Art History tutor at Mairangi Arts Centre.

This year’s participating school are: Albany Senior High School, Birkenhead College, Camel College, Kirsten School, Long Bay College, Rangitoto College, Westlake Girls’ High School and Whangaparaoa College.
