Direct from Indonesia and exploding with youthful energy, four young dancers from the contemporary Swargaloka dance troupe perform in Wellington on the 5th of December. The troupe, some as young as 16, are from a leading dance school in Jakarta. They have performed widely around the world.
Presenting traditional dances from Java and Bali as well as bold new choreography, their works explore contemporary life, both urban and rural, and range across both serious and comic themes. Delicately curving fingers and distinctive eye movements are features of the Indonesian dance styles on show.
Accompanying them in Wellington will be the two gamelan ensembles based at Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music: Gamelan Padhang Moncar and Gamelan Taniwha Jaya. They will provide live music in the contrasting styles of the Indonesian islands of Java and of Bali. The local Indonesian community gamelan group will also perform.
The group was one of the last that leading composer Jack Body, who died earlier this year, was working to bring to New Zealand. This show will be dedicated to his memory.
This is a rare opportunity to experience dancers of this calibre from Indonesia.
