Two Indonesian music ensembles, Javanese Gamelan Padhang Moncar and Balinese GamelanTaniwha Jaya (25 people in all!) have been invited to perform at the International Gamelan Festival in the city of Yogyakarta in early July.
They will take with them new home-grown repertoire for gamelan, created by innovative young NZ composers under the mentorship of well-known composers Jack Body and Gareth Farr. The emsembles will perform these exciting works as well as traditional compositions in villages, towns and cities across the islands of Java and Bali during the two and a half week tour.
Gamelan has established a unique presence in New Zealand's multi-cultural musical landscape. Featuring gongs and other bronze percussion instruments, gamelan has a long tradition in New Zealand, particularly in Wellington - of over 30 years! The current group's range of ages and cultures reflects this tradition and passion for the music.
To support this tour and raise the necessary funds the ensembles have joined Boosted, the new Arts Foundation crowdfunding site. If you would like to donate see: http://www.boosted.org.nz/projects/gamelan-tour-to-indonesia
