The Wallace Arts Trust are calling for entries to the 26th Annual Wallace Art Awards 2017, with prizes amounting to over $275,000 in value, including international art residencies, monetary prizes and stipends.

Contemporary New Zealand painting, sculpture, video, drawing and unique photography and print are all eligible to be submitted. The Awards are given to encourage and develop the visual arts in New Zealand and to highlight artists creating remarkable work. In 2015 the Wallace Arts Trust received 531 entries from which 85 entries were been selected as finalists.

The 2017 Awards will be judged by prominent members of the arts sector Jae Hoon Lee, Richard Maloy and Linda Tyler.

The Wallace Art Awards are comprised of nine Awards, including five overseas residencies, two of which require a different application form, have specific criteria and are judged by a different panel (please find further details below).

The Wallace Arts Trust Paramount Award
A six month residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York. This includes a studio, 24 hour access to ISCP’s facilities, support from onsite staff, the opportunity to attend a minimum of 22 lectures given by members on the New York art community, a minimum of three field trips including out-of-town expenses, and a minimum of two open-studio exhibitions/receptions. The Paramount Award Winner also receives a bronze trophy by Terry Stringer. The ISCP is the premier residency-based contemporary art centre in the United States for emerging to mid-career artists and curators from around the world.

The Kaipara Wallace Arts Trust Award
A three month residency at Altes Spital in Solothurn, Switzerland. This includes a large studio apartment, access to specialist studios and workshops and the opportunity to attend exhibitions and work with specialist advisors.

Fulbright-Wallace Arts Trust Award (further details below)
A ten week residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts in San Francisco, USA. Fulbright New Zealand was established in 1948 to promote mutual understanding through educational and cultural exchanges between New Zealand and the United States of America.

The Wallace Arts Trust Vermont Award
A three month residency at the Vermont Studio Centre, USA. This includes, a studio, meals, accommodation, a stipend, counsel from a distinguished roster of six visiting artists, and the fellowship of professional peers from around the world. The Vermont Studio Center was founded by artists in 1984 and is the largest international artists’ and writers’ Residency Program in the United States.

Second Runners Up Award: $2,500

Peoples’ Choice Award: $750 (Winner to be announced at the end of the Travelling Exhibition)

Jury Award: non-monetary

Announcing a new Residency for New Zealand artists at the British School at Rome

The BSR Wallace New Zealand Residence Award

The Wallace Arts Trust is pleased to announce its co-sponsorship of a new Residency for New Zealand artists in collaboration with the British School at Rome. The Residency is an initiative driven by independent working artists and is designed to facilitate a unique opportunity for New Zealand artists in their early to mid-career stage. The Trust will provide both financial and administrative support to deliver this Residency within the Annual Wallace Arts Awards, announced in September.

The BSR is the UK’s leading research institute abroad, supporting the full range of arts, humanities and social sciences. The School occupies an elevated place in the Valle Giulia in central Rome and supports residents from various fields – architects, artists, archaeologists and historians, for example. Within the Lutyens-designed façade the New Zealand artist in residence will establish themselves at both the BSR and in the city, and undertake a productive period of research and/or hands-on work.

The BSR offers accommodation, board, support staff costs, and inclusion in a group exhibition and the annual Fine Arts Catalogue for one studio-based artist over a three month period. All award holders are invited to attend the various BSR events that take place during their stay, which include lectures, workshops, conferences, exhibitions, and occasional site visits. Artists are also given access to the full range of BSR services including access to archives, sites and museum collections not normally open to the public.

This residency was initiated by Enrica Sciarrino (Associate Professor in Classics, University of Canterbury), Simon Ogden and Andrew Drummond (independent working artists). Simon Ogden and Andrew Drummond, will be joined by Linda Tyler and a representative of the Wallace Art Trust on the Residency Selection Panel. Applications will be assessed by the Panel with shortlisted candidates interviewed and reviewed by the BSR prior to the Award being announced in September as part of the Annual Wallace Art Awards.    

The Residence is for three months, running from January to March 2018. The artist resident will be expected to submit a report on their tenure, along with images of the work completed in Rome to both the Wallace Arts Trust and the BSR, as well as donate a copy of any publications arising from their research whilst holding the award to the BSR’s library and to the Wallace Arts Trust.

The Fulbright-Wallace Arts Trust Award 2017

Since 1992 the Wallace Arts Trust has hosted the annual Wallace Art Awards, making it the longest running art awards in New Zealand. For the ninth year in a row, the Wallace Arts Trust and the Fulbright Foundation are awarding one artist with the Fulbright-Wallace Arts Trust Award. The Fulbright-Wallace Arts Trust Award is for an outstanding mid-career or senior New Zealand visual artist to undertake a ten week residency at Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito, California.

Headlands Center for the Arts provides an unparalleled environment for the creative process and the development of new work and ideas. Through artists’ residencies and public programmes, Headlands offers opportunities for reflection, dialogue and exchange that build understanding and appreciation for the role of art in society.

Award holders are granted international travel to and from New Zealand to the Headlands Center for the Arts during the American Spring or Summer, accommodation at the Center, a private artist’s studio, partial board, a stipend and the opportunity to participate in programmes and activities exclusively available to Fulbright scholars in the US.

Upon conclusion of the residency, award holders are expected to have completed a body of work that demonstrate tangible benefits to New Zealand visual arts. Previous grantees have used their award to complete sculptures, video installations, intermedia projects and much more.

The 2017 judging panel consists of prominent art practitioners and past Fulbright-Wallace Arts Trust Award winners, Steve Carr, Phil Dadson, Richard Maloy and Ruth Watson.
