Will Christchurch's boldest Gap Filler project, the Pallet Pavilion, live to see another Summer? Gap Filler’s Pallet Pavilion was built in late 2012 by 250+ volunteers using 3000 wooden pallets. More than 50 companies donated skilled labour and materials to make it happen. It's an amazing achievement and a beautiful piece of transitional architecture in a much changed, devastated city. The pavilion is a beacon of hope, innovation and resourcefulness. It was conceived to respond to the loss of venues for live music and community events in post-quake Christchurch. An extremely ambitious project, it has been an incredible success, hosting 70+ events over the Summer and staffed by 40+ volunteers. It has had amazing media coverage, too with features in Australian Geographic, Cuisine, the Daily Mail, the Weekend Australian and more. More than 25 000 people have visited in just 5 months and it has hosted more than 100 events from live music to markets to children’s parties to lectures. 45 volunteers have contributed to it running across the Summer. The Pavilion is a temporary project and its deconstruction was due to take place in May this year- now in other words. But across March and April many people have asked for it to be kept for one more Summer. Gap Filler as a charitable trust can’t afford to keep it. There are ongoing costs that must be met – security as required by the building consent, power, toilets and a venue manager. So they’re putting it to you: friends, fans, supporters and the community to help raise the money needed and also spread the word. This is the public campaign where Gap Filler are trying to raise $80 000. This closes on June 8. Being a crowdfunding campaign, if the target is reached, the Pavilion stays, but if not, then Gap Filler receive none of the money and the Pavilion will have to come down in June. It is an ambitious campaign to say the least. "Gap Filler is giving the decision over to the community, here and afar, about the future of this project. We love the Pavilion, but it's a huge project. We like the way that this campaign will decide its future" says Coralie Winn, Co-Founder and Director of Gap Filler. "On May 31 with 9 days to go, we're at $56 000! That's amazing. But there's still a long way to go. They say that most of the funding comes in the last 2 days, so we shall see!"
