The Going West Literary Weekend (September 10-11) has more than 15 sessions spread over two days, interspersed with great food, coffee and wine. On the Saturday, after attendees have sated their hunger and quenched their thirst, they can sit back and enjoy the Saturday afternoon of poetry, discussion and satire.
Serie Barford, Going West Trustee and one of the speakers of the A Small Room with Large Windows session has been awarded the 2011 Seresin Landfall Residency. She will be joined in this session by Wystan Curnow, the 2010 resident, and Wendy Harrex from Otago University Press, to talk about the intricacies of writing residencies.
Established in 2009, the Seresin Landfall Residency is a six-week writing residency at either Seresin Estate Marlborough or Tuscany, to be taken at any time of the year. A cottage at Waterfall Bay in the Marlborough Sounds or a Water Mill in Gaiole in Chianti, Tuscany, is made available for the successful applicant to work on a writing project. The residency is open to early to mid-career writers, aged twenty-one or over, working in any genre, who have previously published at least one book.
During the residency, Serie will be working on a short story collection based on the Samoan concept of teu le va – taking care of relationships within and between visible and invisible worlds.
Serie is of European, Samoan and Algonquin Indian descent. Her poetry collection Tapa Talk was published by Huia in 2007. She performed with Polynation at the Queensland Poetry and Going West Festivals in 2008. Recent work’s been published in The Contemporary Pacific vol 22, Maui Ola, Brèves 91, Making Settler Colonial Space, BMP, Trout, MAI Review, JAAM and Phantom Billstickers 2011.
