The artists invited to freely create for this show work across mediums and styles, with a range of experience adding to the liberated salute to inspired invention from both established and new practitioners.
The ten artists making pieces for Cathexes are Graham Ambrose, Dominic Burrell, Joanna Campbell, John Edgar, Karen Ellett, Morgan Haines, Zekiah Heath, Robyn Irwin, Barry Lett and Emily Siddell.
The timing of the Cathexes exhibition as we move into the festive season is also one of celebration. The open concept of this exhibition is an incitement to innovation and ingenuity.
Graham Ambrose has taken this opportunity to move away from his usual medium of clay, creating sculptural works from pieces of pyrite given to him by Len Castle. Barry Lett will show a new series of re-assembled cut-outs. Painted vibrant colours the 'Small Plys' take their abstracted shapes from the natural environment.
The work of Emily Siddell will have its premier showing in Cathexes, with an exquisite glass and slip cast ceramic lei developed from Emily's earlier work, for which she has become renowned.
Pictured are wrist adornments made by jeweler Joanna Campbell, from her collection of Vintage anodized cuffs, each one embellished with a unique lace pattern.
Cathexes will open with a preview on Friday 10th October 2008 from 5 - 7pm, and continues for three weeks until Sunday 9th November.
Piece Gallery is located in the Matakana Village and is open seven days a week, Monday to Friday 10 - 5, Saturday 9 - 4 and Sunday 10 - 3. Phone 09 422 9125 or email gallery@piecegallery.co.nz for further information.
