A group exhibition in celebration of the candle stick opens at Piece Gallery in the Matakana Village on Friday 30th May 2008, with a preview from 5 - 7pm.
A functional yet ornamental object the candle stick has withstood the ages into contemporary times. The exhibition offers the opportunity for each artist to explore their interpretation of the traditional candle stick. The playful name Fiddlesticks tempts an engagement of imagination for each of the eight artists interpreting the theme in the mediums of ceramic and glass.
The salute to the candle holder is being realized by Stephen Bradbourne, John Ecuyer, Rose Griffin, Mike de Haan, John Haines, Gary Horton, Barry Lett, and Ainsley O'Connell.
Nelson based ceramicist Rose Griffin has interpreted the theme around the title, embellishing her dark oval forms with fiddle and stick motifs.
Local artist Gary Hortons' ceramic pieces are reminiscent of an ancient abbey with their architectural forms in hues of colour attesting to their raku firing.
The ambiance of candle light is the epitome of coziness, as we ready ourselves for winter, the eclecticism of this group show will warm the spirits as well as our homes.
