Local short films will be showcased at Homegrown ’09 as part of the New Zealand International Film Festival. MIC Toi Rerehiko presents three programmes this year – Works on Film, Works on Video-Drama and Works on Video-Animation and Experimental.
Works On Film features six films that have received support from The New Zealand Film Commission. Two of them, The Six Dollar Fifty Man and Lars and Peter were selected for competition out of 1920 short films at The Cannes Film Festival, 2009.
Mokopuna has screened at The Tampere Film Festival, Finland and The Sprockets International Film Festival for Children, Canada.
Poppy is a performance capture CGI film by James Cunningham.
Academy Award winner Grant Major directs the surreal Undergrowth and Jason Stutter, whose previous work, Careful With That Axe traumatised audiences around the world follows up with Careful With That Powertool.
Works on Video-Drama spans the gamut of emotions – from anger and fear through to happiness and light. The characters represented in these films range from the dark and dysfunctional through to the light and lovable. There’s something for everyone in this smorgasbord of works from Aoteoroa’s finest up and coming filmmakers.
Works on Video-Animation and Experimental is an eclectic programme which brings together the cream of Kiwi animators and innovators. Prepare yourself for ugliness and horror, for beauty and love, for laughter and tears. This is a must see collection of shorts that reflects the diversity and exuberance of its creators.
