MIC Toi Rerehiko presents Pick Up Styx by Raewyn Turner and ReSense and FLAP, a collaborative cross sensory presentation by Raewyn Turner and Canadian electronics artist, Diana Burgoyne.

This collection is on display at MIC Gallery 321 K Road from 3 September – 8 October.

This interactive exhibit utilises video, smell, sound, electronics and digital media in a collaborative process between two cultures and two communities. All three pieces explore issues of human relationship and environmental concerns, focusing on the under-explored olfactory sense, Raewyn’s most notable practice blended with Diana’s extensive electronic experience.

RE/SENSE was Co-Produced with the Banff New Media Institute 2009, exhibited and presented in MuVi2, in the Third Congress 2009 Synaesthesia: Science & Art, in Granada, Spain, and in Interactive Futures : Stereo, Vancouver 2009.The piece examines synthetic synaesthesia and anaesthesia of place. In collaboration with international commercial perfumer, Louise Crouch, RE/SENSE utilises a selection of synthetic fragrances relating synaesthetically to the colours of green.

In contrast, FLAP explores authentic body odour to convey a theme of disruption of constraints imposed on perception by culture.

Pick Up Styx serves a culminating performance, inviting audiences to participate in a dialogue enquiring into the ciphers of various perfumes created since the year 2001.

While both Pick Up Styx and RE/SENSE have been presented internationally, FLAP will premier in New Zealand as a multisensory interactive electronic installation.
