I AM SKELLY
PARAMOUNT THEATRE 3-10 MARCH, 9:45PM
"A dark, eternal clown staggers the dance of death"
I Am Skelly is the latest work by AkeAke Theatre Company in the New Zealand Fringe Festival and opens Wednesday next week at the Paramount Theatre in Courtenay Place.
Inspired by the medieval Danse Macabre, this dance theatre traces the memoirs of an eternal, dark clown called Skelly as he re-lives intimate moments with great and tragic figures of history as they prepare for the last dance. Skelly dances a collection of haunting and lyrical vignettes of final moments in the lives of various souls including a betrothed sailor, a condemned queen and a medieval judge of heretics.
I Am Skelly is performed by Rhys Latton (trained at Pantheatre in Paris) and directed by Jessica Sutherland, (final year Masters in Directing student at Toi Whakaari and Victoria University). Jessica is presenting this show as her required technical show for her masters degree. The co-directors of AkeAke Theatre Company have been devising their own shows through choreographic improvisation and image for 5 years.
AkeAke won the Stellar Best Theatre award in Fringe 2003 for their mythic dance theatre Perfect Pool.
Rhys and Jessica are also involved in Kohu, an aerial-dance-theatre fairie tragedy, also in the Paramount at 8pm, 3-10 March.
