Headache: “I feel like my dreams and goals are slipping away from me. First it’s a day wasted, then a week and if I’m honest I’m scared that my whole life will just pass me by and all the things I wanted to do and be, won’t be possible”
'Unfocused' is probably what your school report would say. Frankly you can keep standing still and keep going over the same ground of destroying your own confidence or it's time for shoulders back. When you feel like there is a huge distance between where you are now and the person you want and need to be, it’s usually because you don’t have a clue what you would look or feel like if you were succeeding and achieving.
Make yourself important enough and take responsibility for your life in 2011.
Take a photograph in your mind and study the following photos:
What does a professional golfer look like when he’s just done a hole in one?
How does a young child stand when his teacher is telling him how he came first in the maths test?
How would an opera singer look when reading their first glittering international review?
How does someone look when they're driving round a new city late for an interview and they're completely lost?
I think you get the point by now.....we need to be able to picture ourselves achieving if we are to know what success looks like.
Now revisit all of those pictures in your mind and replace that person in the picture frame with YOU. Time to reframe how you see yourself.
Picture owning your space in the world
I have included two of my big picture vision boards (above) for some inspiration. Use your innate skills and talents to create your picture, this is your playground and sandpit!
1. Collect a pile of magazines and newspapers. [15/20 or so]
2. Find some quiet time and just flip the pages...anything that identifies with who you want to be and where you want to go in your career cut it out and start making a pile of clippings...cut out anything, pictures, words, phrases. Try not to over think this.......... just go with your gut feeling.
3. Stick them on a board, no right or wrong....just create a collage of you and your vision of you.
4. Walk away and go for a walk, when you come back, just sit back and look at this vision of YOU.......in your notebook start to write out how this makes you feel. Talk out loud to yourself if that’s your preferred style of communicating. Start to own who you want and need to be. What does it look like, feel, and smell......now you’re getting the idea.
5. Write out five statements to yourself, affirming your vision of yourself. This is now your inspiration board. Put it somewhere where you can live with it and draw from the energy and vision of who and what you truly are going to be! The first time I did this I was shocked at if I’m honest a little ashamed of how clear the picture was.
* * * The Next Step * * *
Now you can see yourself as you want to be, it’s the first major step to achieving it. This is like a road map, you’re sitting in a car ready to start the journey....now it gets exciting, where are going first?
