The poems come from a play entitled Canopy, which Goudge first wrote and directed in 1999.
The play is a mythical story set in the ancient bush of the Waitakere Ranges, where the native folk talk in verse.
Aiding John in his performance of the work will be Fleur Fitzpatrick, an Auckland actress who recently featured as Rizzo in the Playhouse Theatre's production of Grease.
The poetry reading is a free event as part of Poetry Month put on by the Waitakere City Council.
The 8-piece John Goudge Band play at the Dogs Bollix Irish Bar, Wednesday 18 July, from 8.30pm - tickets $10 at the door, or from Go West Music, 15 & 18 Catherine St, Henderson.
