When Wellington art & design students were assigned the task to create their own publication they had no idea where the project would eventually lead. Three months later, the photography and typography (graphic design) students at WelTec’s School of Creative Technologies have now launched Wellington’s latest arts magazine iii.

The student magazine showcases a range of home grown creatives from musicians, artists and tattooists to New Zealand-born international jewellery designers, with a distinctly kiwi flavour.  The focus is on New Zealanders who are marking their mark locally and internationally in the creative industries and the publication is supplemented with a sophisticated range of intriguing photography.

Over thirteen creative technologies students were involved in the publication of iii.  Amongst the students were principal editors and project leads, Said Constantine and Hailey Yee, who led the project from concept generation, to soliciting sponsorship, print management and promotion.

The magazine title iii stands for Innovation, Inspiration and Ideas, which according to Hailey Yee forms the basis of any creative endeavour. "As art students we are influenced by the world around us, in a similar way we wanted readers to be inspired by the stories of local artists.”

In accordance with the spirit of inspiration, the WelTec students conducted a series of interviews with New Zealand creatives, which include Alpha Shift, Jonny Hilson, Ross Hemara, Bruno Merz, Mark McDevitt and Shel Yang.  Each interview centres on how the artist found their way to working in the creative industries, their passions within their field and their advice to the next wave of artists and designers.

Said Constantine shares her approach, “what you’ll find in the magazine are interviews with artists who have inspired and stirred us.

“The production of this magazine has been a huge step into the unknown, an amazing learning experience. Seeing an idea transform from one point to another was something, holding onto that idea was another. The magazine is a great achievement - it gave us a real taste of design and the reality of producing something in the professional world.  We hope the end result will inspire our readers.”
