As part of the Auckland Plan which is currently in development, the mayor has identified the need for a city centre plan to help the city reach its true potential.
We've recently written the City Centre Masterplan discussion document (3mb PDF). It's the forerunner to the actual City Centre Masterplan, and it outlines the council's thinking on the direction the city centre should take in the coming years in order to fulfil the mayor's vision of a truly international city.
Before we develop the discussion document into the draft plan, we want to know what Aucklanders want for their city. Once we've got your thoughts we'll take them into consideration when we draft the plan.
We're consulting now until June 17, 2011 and would love to hear your thoughts. Have a look through the discussion document (3mb PDF) and take a bit of time to fill out our online form. Alternatively, you can send an email to us or call us on (09) 301 0101 end_of_the_skype_highlightingand we can send you a copy of the discussion document which contains a feedback form and a freepost reply.
Think of the cities you have seen or visited and what you liked about them. Think about the small things like the trees or the pavers, and the big things, like the transport systems.
A good city is a combination of things: it's vibrant and it's the cultural and civic heart of the region, it has pleasant and interesting streets and shops and plenty of parks and open spaces, it is a centre for business and learning, and is all linked together by efficient public transport. It's a place where people live, work, shop and play.
What about Auckland? Well, we have some great assets. A fabulous waterfront, lovely undulating terrain, some awesome parks, shops, universities and landmarks, and a really diverse population - but what can we do to make it even better?
Consider these Auckland specific questions as you go through the discussion document (3mb PDF):
