The artists first met at Elam in the early 1990s and remain close friends and colleagues, sharing a passion for painting and art. With their thickly applied paint, Malone's large bust portraits invite you forward to examine the built-up surface closely, but they then force you to move away in order to take in the full image. From close range, you notice the surface: painted lines of pure colour, which do not blend together to form the portrait until you move back and see the whole picture.
Adrian Jackman's paintings play with ideas about passing time, and conflicts between the past, present and the future. Nature and technology clash in paintings such as Happiness, (2007) where a giant in a golden diving suit walks through the now overgrown ruins of Chernobyl.
The paintings of Grant Whibley feature birds, which act as symbols of faith, spirituality and mysticism. Very personal, his works reference birds on display in museums - odd groupings of many different kinds of bird, packed together, which can be seen and interpreted in a variety of ways.
The work of all three artists is connected by their shared exposure and response to the currents of change in the world around them: the shifting environment, the art world, and today's global consumer culture. Accompanying the show is an illustrated catalogue with a very readable essay, funded through a grant from Creative Communities/North Shore City.
