Catch a glimpse of the future of art, design and digital media at this year’s WelTec Creative Technologies series of exhibitions The Creative Collective.
The collection will showcase a rich variety of new approaches to art, design and digital media, including work by 2009 BEST Design Gold Award winner Emily Pita.
The Creative Collective provides audiences with an opportunity to explore an exhibition of sculpture, light, interior design, animation, cultural design, film and TV by the capital’s next wave of artists and designers.
Exhibition venues include Toi Poneke Gallery, the NZ Film Archive, the Fridge Gallery (WelTec Petone Campus) and WelTec’s CBD Campus.
Set to make an impact in the world of film is visual arts student Talalelei Suailua. His powerful installation Beyond the front gate uses film and animation to explore cultural dichotomy and the search for identity in New Zealand’s multi-cultural context. Talalelei’s installation opens at the NZ Film Archive 4 November, 5-6pm.
Talalelei has recently completed an internship with the NZ Film Archive, where he developed his final year exhibition with the support of WelTec tutors and the NZ Film Archive.
“The internship set up by WelTec was a great opportunity for me; I learnt a lot about the history of Pasfika film in New Zealand and had opportunities to engage with amazing New Zealand film makers and artists.”
NZ Film Archive mentor, Mark Sweeny, says internships are an important way to connect budding film makers with New Zealand’s film heritage, “engaging with students who are passionate about film is fantastic – for us it can’t get any better.”
WelTec Programme Manager for the School of Creative Technologies, Teriu Lemon comments “Contact with industry is highly beneficial. Students gain a thorough understanding of the industry, have the ability to network and develop their professional practice. Close industry partnerships are a key feature of the Bachelor of Creative Technologies programme.”
